Khan Academy
This year we are testing out online homework. We are doing this using the free online site: Khanacademy.org. I have used this website and found it to be helpful, easy to use, and informative. Each student will need to create an account and add our class to get credit for doing the assigned homework problems.
Below are some of the benefits of using Khan Academy (KA) for our homework this year.

Student Paced
With KA, students will be able to do the assigned homework sets at their own pace. This means students can do all of the homework quickly if they understand the unit well, or they can take longer if the concepts are more challenging. However, the homework sets are due by the time we take our unit's EMT (unit test).
To complete the homework, your student will need to log in, search for the assignment, then get 5 problems in a row correct. Sometimes the homework will only require 3 in a row correct. Additionally, students may complete the homework by getting the first or the first two problems correct. Look at the top right for the check-marks to see what is needed. See the picture examples below. Helps and Hints
Most assignments will have helps and hints available to the right of the problem (this is illustrated below). However, if you use a hint, then the problem won't count as one of your 5 in a row. Instead of an "x" or a check-mark, it will show a light bulb. The light bulb indicated that you had help on the problem. It's good to get help when you are stuck, that's why these options are available, but you will still need to be able to answer the problems without the helps offered to complete the assignment.
The example below shows that one hint was used, and there are still 2 hints left. There is also a video that could be watched if you didn't want to use the hints, or if the hints didn't give you the help you needed. |
Video Tutorials
Each topic has one or more videos associated with it to give further instruction for students who are stuck. The videos can be accessed on the left side of the screen and they have a "play button" symbol to the left of the topic. The homework exercises have a "star" symbol to the left of the topic.
Below is an example of what your student will see. As you can see, for the homework set titled "Subtracting negative numbers intro" there are two videos that can help students understand the topic better - Adding and subtracting negative numbers, and Subtracting a negative = adding a positive. I encourage students to use these videos to help as they get stuck on homework problems. |
